On my MacBook, Java 1.4.2 is shipped by default installation. But to run tomcat 6, I will need Java SE 5.0 or higher. Upgrading Java is pretty simple under Mac OS X. All you’ve got to do is to click the Apple logo on the top left corner and run the menu “Software Update …”.
After a reboot, the Java 5 should be ready. To check the java version, you can open the Terminal and run the following command in it :
The next step is to download the tomcat binary on the site http://tomcat.apache.org. After the download, you will find a new folder apache-tomcat-6.0.14 on your desktop. Rename this folder to Tomcat6 and move it to /Library directory.
Then we need to set two environment variables JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME. To do this, you need to create a .profile file in your home directory if it doesn’t exist, and add the following lines to the file.
The default tomcat installation has no users configured. To add an administrator account, you can open the /Library/Tomcat6/conf/tomcat-users.xml file with a plain text editor, and insert the following line between tomcat-users tags :
The last thing to do is to make all the scripts in /Library/Tomcat6/bin directory executable :

Now you can fire up tomcat by running the cataline.sh script in a Terminal, you will get the launching messages looking something like this :

Open Safari and go connect to the site http://127.0.0.1:8080/, if you see the cute tomcat logo, the installation is done.
